Comments:
Popular for its yellow flowers in early spring and its gray and brown exfoliating bark; attractive rounded habit; edible red fruit; Dirr calls it "an excellent small tree" and recommends it for the Midwest U.S.
Physical Characteristics : A decidious Shrub growing to 5 m (16ft) by 5 m (16ft) at a medium rate. It is hardy to zone 5 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Feb to March, and the seeds ripen in September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees.It is noted for attracting wildlife. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. and can grow in very alkaline soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires moist soil.The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.
